Virunga National Park

Mountain Gorillas

In Nord of the country located the chain of five volcanoes which are the home of 604 of approximately 1000 living gorillas in the World. Trekking gorillas in Rwanda is safe and relatively accessible. It takes almost 3 hours to drive from the capital city, Kigali to the volcano national park. Gorillas trekking permit is a requirement, this permit cost $1500.

Akagera National Park

Located in the East of the country, Akagera national park occupies 2500 square meters. Is one of the best national parks in Rwanda with its different range of animals such as: Lions, Elephants, zebras, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, etc.

Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe forest is one of largest parts that has attracted many tourists from all over the World to Rwanda. It has significant contribution in boosting Rwandan tourism industry. Nyungwe Forest occupies 1.019 kilometer squares which is the home of two groups of Chimpanzees.
Nyungwe national park has about 1,068 plants species which the dominant are:

  • Trees where more than 200 species are found in the forest.
  • More than 240 species of Orchides and so other many are being discovered each year.

For those who have interest in watching birds, Nyungwe forest hosts more than 300 birds species in which 29 of them are endemics to Albertine Rift valley, which makes this park the most popular destination for bird watching.

In the forest you can find more than 80 different species of mammal in which about 13 of them are primate species. The forest is famous for its 13 primate species including:

  1. White colobus monkeys
  2. Black monkeys
  3. Chimpanzee which can be trekked in two different places; Uwinka and other big group in Cyamudongo Forest.

The forest also boasts a canopy walk, hikking and water falls
